Filipino students run naked
There's nothing like student activism... giving authority... the naked truth. With placards appealing for state subsidies for education, these fun-loving students from the University of the Philippines reveal a political side. And their backside. And more. It's the annual naked run undertaken by the bold but masked boys of the Alpha Phi Omega fraternity. It usually takes place in the nippier month of December. But instead of being frowned upon by the university, administrators asked the fraternity to stage the run as part of the institutions 100th birthday, no doubt wanting more exposure for the centennial celebrations. Soundbite: Masked naked run participant, saying (Filipino): "This is mainly about the University celebrating 100 years. That's important. So we decided to stage the Oblation Run that we conduct every year. It's a privilege!" Taking it's name and dress-sense from the university's Oblation statue, the run originally started in the 70s as a protest against the national banning of a film about oppressed plantation workers called "Naked Hero." And to the delight of the crowds, it's been going ever since. Soundbite: Dove Subingsubing, second-year student, saying (English): "It's very exciting, and I think it's a very liberating thing that we celebrate yearly. And it's definitely different, exciting." For the crowds who weren't happy with the length... of the 1 kilometer run, they could capture the bare necessities on their phone, if they can stop their hands from shaking.
