China's century-old survivor
early two weeks after China's devastating earthquake, remarkable stories of survival continue to emerge. This is Li Xiaolan. She's 100 years old, and was pulled from the wreckage of her house in Pingtong, a mountainous town in Sichuan province. With nowhere to stay and her home destroyed, Li was carried to safety on a bamboo chair, according to Chinese state television. But survival stories like Li's are diminishing by the day. Chinese premier Wen Jiabao outlined Beijing's new priorities while visiting a disaster zone. SOUNDBITE: Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, saying (Mandarin): "If we said in the previous short period that our priority was to save lives, now relocating the people affected by the disaster and rebuilding their homes is our long-term and even more arduous task." And, at a news conference in Beijing, Sichuan's local government released the latest deathtoll. SOUNDBITE: Li Chengyun, Vice Governor of Sichuan Province, saying (Mandarin): "Up until May the 22nd, the earthquake had killed 55,239 people and injured 281,000. 24,949 people are missing." Some of those victims remain where they died, like at this school. Beijing says it's won't tolerate incompetence in the relief effort. As if to make this point, four officials have been punished for not doing enough to fight the earthquake. Sichuan province has a thriving Catholic population. Father Jacob Li's church was destroyed in the quake, so he'd made a temporary place of worship elsewhere. SOUNDBITE: Father Jacob Li saying (Mandarin): "We used to use the square to hold open air Mass. Now we will set up a temporary altar to provide services for the believers. Our chapel may have fallen but our faith is still standing." But China's government has ordered all religious services be stopped. It fears disease spreading among large groups of people.
