In December 2007, the operations of MTR and Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation has been merged to form one of the most efficient and far-reaching railway networks in Asia. The newly expanded system extends all the way from the heart of Central and Causeway Bay to the New Territories and Lantau Island. Its 168.1km of track covers 80 stations on the Kwun Tong, Tsuen Wan, Island, Tung Chung, Tseung Kwan O, East Rail, West Rail, Ma On Shan and Disneyland Resort lines. The MTR now also operates a 35.2km Airport Express and 36.2km Light Rail networks which can take you to Hong Kong Airport and 68 stops in the North West New Territories. It also provides speedy through train services to major cities across Mainland China. Helping average 3.4 million people reach their destination every weekday, the MTR is regarded as one of the world's leading railways for safety, reliability, customer service and cost efficiency. 政務司司長唐英年表示，兩鐵正式合併，長遠有助提高整個鐵路網絡的運作效率，使新鐵路的規劃，更加完善和統一，令廣大乘客和社會得益。 運輸及房屋局局長鄭汝樺表示，兩鐵合併是香港鐵路史上重要里程，能令整體社會帶來裨益。 唐英年今天（12月2日）出席兩鐵合併慶祝典禮致辭時表示，地鐵公司和九廣鐵路公司合併後，港鐵規模處於世界前列，並產生協同效益，每天280多萬乘客可受惠於調低車費；乘客轉車也更為方便。 他表示，香港鐵路運輸系統是蜚聲國際的品牌，地鐵和九鐵位居全球最成功鐵路機構行列，並不斷把成功經驗推展至世界各地，是香港人的驕傲；並指出，鐵路網絡不斷擴展和改善，有助推動經濟發展，改善市民生活質素。 當局已決定規劃和詳細設計西港島線，《2007 - 08年度施政報告》中，也提出多項大型鐵路建設計劃，包括南港島線、沙中線，以及廣深港高速鐵路。 唐英年表示，這些交通基建可拓闊香港鐵路網絡的覆蓋面，提升香港的綜合競爭力；並接通內地龐大而迅速發展的鐵路網絡，開拓更廣闊的腹地。 鄭汝樺對兩鐵合併落實表示歡迎，並指出，兩鐵合併是香港鐵路史上重要里程，能為整體社會帶來裨益。 她表示，除了每年為市民節省約6億元，也令轉車更為方便；而港鐵日後設計新路線的走線、車站分布及轉乘安排時，將更具彈性，提高整體鐵網絡的協調性，減少將來鐵路項目路線及資源運用的重疊。 Today's merger of Hong Kong's two rail companies will enhance the effectiveness and long-term planning of the city's entire rail system, Chief Secretary for Administration Henry Tang says. Speaking at the merger celebration ceremony today, Mr Tang said the move will benefit commuters with fare reductions and more convenience. Secretary for Transport & Housing Eva Cheng said the successful merger is an important chapter in Hong Kong railway history and will bring commuters annual savings of $600 million. "The Mass Transit Railway Corporation will have greater flexibility in planning the alignment, stations and interchange arrangement for new railway lines. This will enhance co-ordination and reduce duplication of railway lines and resources," Ms Cheng said. The corporation has taken up the transport services of the Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation, including the East and West Rail and Light Rail Transit networks.
