What you are about to see is not a scene from Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds. This is a water tower in north Bismarck. It's home to over 100 turkey vultures. These scavengers have been roosting in the area for several years. The birds have about a four-foot wing span and spend most of their day feasting on roadkill. State Game and Fish Wildlife Cheif Randy Kreil lives near the water tower. He says they don't make a sound and are no threat to humans OR pets. (Randy Kreil, State Game and Fish Dept.) Actually, what's interesting is if you are here just before they start roosting in the evening and it's a warm evening and there's air currents and there is thermals...they soar around. And you can see them coming for miles from the south and they actually look like the flying monkeys out of the Wizard of Oz. So that's kind of a creepy feeling to but once they get right above you and they are soring around, they are just majestic animals. They hardly flap their wings and they just sore on the air currents. They are very interesting creatures. Kreil says people are more tolerant of the birds now since no one lives directly underneath the water tower. The birds are expected to be in the area for at least a few more weeks until the weather turns colder.
