Congressman Walter Jones (R-NC) speaks on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives on the matter of 2 U.S. Border Patrol Agents, Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean, who have been imprisoned since January 17, 2007 and held in solitary confinement. In the course of their duties securing the border, they sought to apprehend an illegal alien Mexican drug smuggler who was bringing in over $1 million of illegal drugs into the United States (and who had already attacked and cut Agent Compean). Agent Ramos fired a single shot at the smuggler in self defense, however the smuggler escaped back to Mexico and was driven off in a waiting car by his partners. A rogue U.S. District Attorney, Johnny Sutton, prosecuted these agents for assault with a deadly weapon and for violation of the drug smuggler's civil rights! Given that it appears evidence vital to the defense was illegally withheld from the Court, these agents were sentenced to 11 and 12 years in federal prison. The U.S. government later admitted today in federal court that the prosecution's star witness (i.e., the drug smuggler) lied under oath. Sutton now faces a new ethics complaint for "willfully misleading" the Court in this case. Many U.S. Congressional Representatives have signed letters to President Bush asking for a full pardon of these agents, and sponsored resolutions in Congress seeking such pardons. These Border Patrol Agents are currently still in prison, and their cases are on appeal before the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.
