YM411 Show # 12 June 21, 2006 In 1942 as war threatened the Pacific, General Douglas McArthur told the people of the Philippines, “I shall return.” In a speech in Australia 9 days later the 62 year old statesman reaffirmed his promise saying “I shall return.” Two and a half years later when he went back to the Philippines he announces, “This is General McArthur… I have returned!” Despite overwhelming odds the old soldier kept his promise. That kind of integrity is hard to find these days. In fact the Bible tells us, “In the last days men shall be trucebreakers.” 2 Tim3:1-3.The Apostle Paul admonishes us in Col 3:17 “Whatever you do in word or deed, DO in the name of the Lord Jesus.” And King Soloman says that it is better not to vow than to not fulfill it. So the question I have for you today is…When you say you will be somewhere on time – are you? When you tell the youth they can depend on you – can they? When you tell someone you will pray for them – do you?Granted, nobody’s perfect. But when you fail, do you admit your mistakes without making excuses? As a disciple you should. Game Idea: Don’t Get BurnedUse book matches and have a contest to see how much kids can reveal about themselves without getting burned. You will need a Person to keep score. The student will say as many things about himself as possible without getting burned or the match going or being blown out. The student might say something like…My name is Chris Keating (1 Point)I go to Carthage High School (1 Point)I am a junior (1 Point)I have a dog named spot (1 Point)I have a hamster named snowflake (1 Point)I like bananas (1 Point)When the match is blown out or dropped the student with the most points wins. Sermon Idea: “If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take his cross, and follow me.” Matthew 16:24The Divine Invitation1. Deny Yourself (discipline)2. Take Up Your Cross (burden bearing)3. Follow Me (obedience) Youth Ministry Tool Tip: Mentoring Have you ever thought about mentoring your students bit didn’t know how to go about it? If so, this is for you! Here are a couple of reasons why you should consider mentoring your young people. 1. Young people make better choices when adults mentor them.they are more likely to…Stay in schoolattend classgo to collegehopeful about the futureless likely to hit someone 2. Youth NEED close adult relationshipsIn today’s society students are becoming more and more isolated from human contact. We now have e-mail, voice mail, fax machines, MySpace, Blogs and many other avenues for them not to have real interaction with people. Here are some ideas that you can use on mentoring. You can do all of these or pick the ones you want. Remember, to be a mentor not everything has to be spiritual. You just have to be relational. Here are a couple of ideas you can use. Try doing one a week or for whatever format fits your schedule. Here is a list of ten1.
