Almost at all times. That strength - controlled strength - is what lets you have in time the "tone" you want, in a way. And lets you get the nuances you are looking for. The way it approaches the note, presses on the fretboard, holds the neck, moves to get any form of vibrato. Suggestion: train the left hand (or the notes playing hand in general) to get stronger and stronger. But ALWAYS warming it up properly.
