The Philadelphia Flyers and the Montreal Canadiens opened their series up with dramatic flair and offensive flurry, eventually needing overtime to determine a winner. Both teams came from seven game series in the first round, but it was impossible to tell from the energy of the game. Early on, it was the Flyers with all the momentum, ignoring the crowd and getting strong pressure on Carey Price. They were rewarded with two goals, a good position to be in at the end of the first period. Home ice has a way of turning a game around, and Montreal did just that, fighting back with a goal midway through the second period. Not much later, Alexei Kovalev tipped in a shot from Tomas Plekanec short-handed, and the scoreboard was even at the end of the second. The Flyers took the momentum away just 19 seconds into the third period, scoring on the power play, and with less than 5 minutes remaining, looked to be in great position to open the series with a win. But Mike Richards took a late penalty, and Montreal took advantage. Kovalev netted his second of the game, sending Saku Koivu's face off win past Martin Biron to tie the game. Overtime was a quick affair, when Tom Kostopoulos snagged a rebound off Andrei Markov's shot, and sent it to the back of the net. Final score, 4-3 Canadiens, with a 1-0 series lead over the Flyers.
