The death toll following the cyclone now tops 78,000. (May 20)[Notes:ANCHOR VOICE] There is more trouble this morning for the military junta of Myanmar. After weeks of cries by humanitarian groups for more access to the cyclone-ravaged country ... The World Bank now says it will not loan the country any more money because of its current outstanding debts. The World Bank says it will provide technical support ... But can not afford to loan the southeastern asian country any money. This news as the humanitarian crisis there worsens. The United Nations undersecretary for humanitarian affairs has finally gotten access to some parts of the country -- touring a tent city on Monday. The military junta has finally agreed to allow some of its neighbors into the hardest-hit areas to oversee the relief efforts. But the assistance may be coming too late. A U-N spokesman describes the conditions in the delta region as terrible. And then there are pictures like these ... showing just how desperate some of the people are. A three-day official period of mourning for the victims of the storm begins on Tuesday, during which time the national flag will be flown at half-mast.
