Obama, Clinton face two big tests
 Source: PANDORA.TV
With voters set to go to the polls in Indiana and North Carolina, public opinion polls suggest the outcome in both states Tuesday may be very close. An average of recent polls in Indiana shows Hillary Clinton leading Barack Obama in the Democratic Primary by a little over 4 and a half points. In North Carolina, Obama leads Clinton in the average of recent polls by 6 and a half points. Analysts say a loss by Clinton in both states-- would likely derail her bid for the Democratic nomination. Alternatively, a loss by Obama in North Carolina and Indiana would deal a major blow to his candidacy. John Geer is an expert in presidential campaigns at Vanderbilt University. SOUNDBITE: John Geer, political science professor at Vanderbilt University, saying (English): "Theyll be a lot of fallout from losing both of those states because he was up comfortably in North Carolina. It doesnt mean that he wont get the nomination. It doesnt mean that he limps to the nomination. But hes gonna have to give a series of speeches and make a series of arguments about why in fact hes the best candidate if both of these states suggest otherwise." After four months of presidential primaries, -- including a 10-point win by Clinton most recently in Pennsylvania-- the results in Indiana and North Carolina may give some more clarity to this protracted race for the Democratic nomination. SOUNDBITE: John Geer, political science professor at Vanderbilt University, saying (English): "Its a tough situation and these superdelegates Im sure are hoping that its clear..that is the worst scenario for them would be that if Barack Obama remains ahead in the delegates and Clinton moves ahead in the vote count. Which way it goes is a real tough one." Obama is hoping not only for victories -- but also for a strong showing among middle-class white voters-- a key constituency for Democrats in the November election and one Obama has yet to consistently win over in his pursuit of the White House.
