Reverend Jeremiah Wright, the pastor to Senator Barack Obama for the past twenty years, said the criticism he has faced since the video of vitriolic sermons that he delivered from the pulpit became public more than a month ago-- is unfair and and unfounded. SOUNDBITE: Reverend Jeremiah Wright saying (English): "This is not an attack on Jeremiah Wright. It has nothing to do with Senator Obama. It is an attack on the black church by people who know nothing about the African American experience." In a question and answer session at the National Press Club in Washington, DC. Wright made it clear to an audience of supporters that Senator Obama did not repudiate him and then implied that the speech on race Senator Obama delivered on March 18th was done out of political expediency. SOUNDBITE: Reverend Jeremiah Wright saying (English): "Politicians say what they say and do what they do because of electability. He had to distance himself because hes a politician. Whether he gets elected or not, Im still going to have to be answerable to God." Wright said that his sermon in which he said, "God Damn, America" was taken out of context. He also refused to back down from his earlier suggestion that the AIDS virus was created by the American government in order to infect people of color. The Obama campaign had no immediate response to Wrights latest comments, but the senator previously said he strongly condemned the statements that have been the subject of controversy. Reverend Wrights comments in Washington come just a week before Obama and Senator Hillary Clinton battle it out in key primaries in North Carolina and Indiana. Jon Decker, Reuters.
