PlusDramatic Calif. Flash Flood RescueDramatic Calif. Flash Flood RescueThe Associated PressA California town is coping with a landslide of mud and ash near an area already scarred by wildfires. Meantime, crews are making progress against wildfires burning across the state. (July 15)A dramatic helicopter rescue, caught-on-tape. Firefighters hoisted four people-- including a baby-- to safety after they became stranded by flash floods. The families became trapped north of Los Angeles Sunday. And the nearby town of Lake Isabella-- already scarred by wildfires-- is now coping with a landslide. Bulldozers are working to re-open road and clear tons of mud left by the slides. Two dozen homes were damaged. And officials are urging people-- for the third straight day-- stay away from the area because there's a chance more rain is on the way. [Notes:aptn stringer/video from sat] But there's a bit of encouraging weather news. Coolers temps are helping crews get better control over the nearly 300 wildfires still burning across the state. So far this fire season, flames have blackened about 13-hundred square miles and destroyed about 100 homes across California. Most of the blazes were sparked by a June 21st lightning storm across the northern part of the state. One officials say it's the "largest single fire event" in California's history. ___ ___, The Associated Press.
