Water Cube hosts first official diving competition

the water cube at night. this building is one of the signature venues of the 2008 beijing olympics, and on tuesday the national aquatic center hosted its first high-profile diving event - the opening day of the 16th fina diving world cup. chinese divers wang feng and qin kai displayed the form that will make them a leading force when olympic competition comes to the water cube in august, the pair claiming gold in the three-metre synchronised springboard. soundbite: (mandarin) "our performance today was not perfect, there were still some minor mistakes. actually, we have been trying to solve these technical problems in training recently. the atmosphere today was quite good and there are so many spectators tonight. we competed today as if we were competing in the olympics." supercaption: wang feng, chinese diver. beijing, and the water cube, is the aim for the world's best divers - and great britain's benjamin swain and nicolas robinson-baker will make the trip to the 2008 games after qualifying with their fourth place finish. soundbite: (english) "yeah we are absolutely excited and we want to go to beijing in august and preferably trying to get a medal, obviously it's our ambition and our dream to the olympics and after 14 years and 12 years diving, we finally made it, so we're both really happy.
