(May 30)New charges for the Georgia doctor who treated a pro wrestler who killed himself and his family. [Notes:handout astin photo; aptn video of dr office] Doctor Phil Astin was charged Thursday in a new 175-count federal indictment with conspiracy and improperly dispending drugs. Astin is accused of giving patients hundreds of illegal prescriptions for drugs. But none of the drugs mentioned were steroids. Authorities had previously said Astin prescribed a 10-month supply of anabolic steroids to wrestler Chris Benoit (ben-WAH') every three to four weeks for a year leading up to the killings. An attorney representing Astin denied the charges. Officials say Benoit strangled his wife with a cord and then used a choke hold to strangle his 7-year-old son in their Atlanta area home last June. He then reportedly placed Bibles next to their bodies before handing himself on a piece of exercise equipment. At the time, tests showed Benoit had roughly 10 times the normal level of testosterone in his system. Some experts believe using the hormone can contribute to paranoia, depression and violent outbursts known as "roid rage." But authorities have never publicly linked the Benoit killings to steroid use. And the wrestler's father believes years of head trauma his son suffered in the ring contributed to the killings. ___ ___, The Associated Press.
