Residents lament about the increase of price of rice for poor people Residents of Maumere, East Nusa Tenggara, lament about the increase of price of rice for poor people that reached 60 percent. The increase which starts from January is burdening residents with low income. Although the price has increased to 1600 rupiah per kilogram, rice for poor people still become residents' favorite. Compared to similar kind of rice which is at 4500 rupiah per liter, rice for poor people is much cheaper. Residents said they remain buying rice for poor people considering that alternative food such as corn has not been harvested until today. According to Head of Maumere's logistics office, Tiktohadi, the increase of price of rice for poor people from 1000 to 1600 rupiah per kilogram is based on government's policy. The logistics office only channels rice commensurate with the reduced subsidy for the rice.
