3/1/2000. McCain visits Orange County, California at a huge rally with 1,500 people. (Then) Marine Corps Major Quang X. Pham introduces McCain. Pham's father, a former South Vietnamese Air Force pilot and survivor of 12 years in reeducation camps, is also on stage along with Cindy McCain and Everett Alvarez, another POW. Pham later wrote the father-son book, "A Sense of Duty." The narrator speaks in Vietnamese but Pham's introduction and McCain's comments are in English. Hoping to gain the support of Vietnamese-American Republicans, Republican presidential candidate (and Vietnam War POW) John McCain once made a campaign stop at the Asian Garden Mall. McCain also drew the ire of some younger Vietnamese Americans when he allegedly called his North Vietnamese captors "gooks" (a derogatory term for Asians in general).
