Academy of Art buys San Francisco Flower Mart
Duration: 4:14Source: YouTube
In November 2007, the Academy of Art University purchased a large portion of the San Francisco Flower Mart. The Academy sent out notices telling all 30 commercial tenants on their newly purchased property that their leases would not be renewed, and they have till April 30th to vacate the property. On December 24th, Christmas Eve, a new evection notice was sent out to the tenants telling them they now had till February 29th to leave. Many of the business are family owned, and have been for generations. The businesses at the flower mart employ an estimated 300 workers and supply flowers to San Francisco Flower Vendors. If the Academy vacates all thirty businesses, this will force the flower vendors out of San Francisco, accounting for an even greater number of jobs. The city will no longer let the Academy of Art use the flower mart as school, yet the Academy of Art will not back down, and still wants all the tenants to leave by February. The city has also let the Academy know that if they do not back down, they will crack down on all their building violations, shutting down several of their building including student housing. Still the Academy refuses to back down.
