Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, met Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak in Jerusalem on Sunday (May 18) as part of a tour of Congress members to the Middle East. Pelosi arrived in Israel on Friday (May 16), shortly after U.S. President George W. Bush concluded a three-day visit to the country to honour Israel on it's 60th anniversary. Pelosi, a key Democrat critic of Bush's war policy in Iraq, arrived in Jerusalem after she visited the battered for talks with U.S. and Iraqi officials, the U.S. embassy said. "As a country that values the security of Israel, we know him (Ehud Barak) as a fighter in uniform for Israel, as a fighter for peace as the prime minister and we are pleased to hear what he has to say this morning," Pelosi told of Barak ahead of their meeting. Barak was due to head to the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh to meet President Hosni Mubarak in a bid to reach a temporary cease fire between Israel and Islamist Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
