NWBIT Championship Game Summary - Cokley vs. Wirkalot (Thursday, March 22nd ) Final Score: Team Cokley 106, Wirkalot 74 Astoria Oregon (NWBIT Sports Network) -- A new champion is crown! Mike Cokley nailed TEN three-pointers -- including several key buckets in the 1st half -- to guide Team Cokley past Team Wirkalot, 106-74, in the NWBIT Championship game at the Astoria Middle School gym. Team Cokley is this year's tournament championship and at times made the game look almost to easy. Mike Cokley finished with 40 points as Kyle Jackson and Matt Cokley each netted 15 for Team Cokley Whom didn't loose one game in this tounament. Young star Jesse Morland posted a good game with 12 points and some solid D, and Paul Isom also scored 8 while coming up with some nice offensive moves. "This tournament was a lot of fun and sign us up for next year," said Team Cokley leader Mike Cokley. Jeff Harroll led Wirkalot with 25 points and Pat Schenk dropped in 13 for his team who were in the thick of things this year just as they were last year. The early stages of the first half were somewhat competitive, with team Cokley playing front-runner for the most part but unable to gain any great point separation. And, following a Harroll layup, Team Wirkalot seemed poised for another comeback in the 2nd half only being down by only 19 points. Mike Cokley opened the 2nd half up with 4 three pointers to get the point separation early in the 3rd quarter. Those points would be the only points Mike would score the rest of the game, but that is all his team needed from him to finish the game. Paul Jacobson did everything he could to keep his tired team in the game, but to no avail. Paul finished the tournament as one of the marquee players, but the constant pressure from Cokley's D kept him from getting on track all night long. The margin of the lead grew to as many as 35 late in the fourth quarter, but some late buckets from Harroll and Schenk closed the gap to reflect the final tally. Wirkalot had a lot of fight in them early on this night, and they deserve credit for getting this far after having to play 4 games in a row. Baseball and other commitments also made for a tiresome tournament and at times made this team look tired and out of focus. On the other hand Team Cokley kept the razor sharp edge that they have had through out the whole of the tournament. They were well rested and had the players to throw at any team they would face. Having the Tournament MVP to guide this team as well is to the advantage of this tough team. Having seen what these teams have to offer next year, this tournament stands to only get bigger and better. Who will competed next year to take the title from Team Cokley? We will have to wait and see what next year brings. Game Notes : This game was indicative of the local talent we have here in Clatsop County. Both teams showed determination and a competitive edge that great teams must posess to move forward in these kind of tournaments.
