Admiral James Stockdale underwent the torture of "the ropes" while held prisoner at the Hanoi Hilton in Vietnam. He explains how the Vietnamese would lock him to the floor and squeeze his arms together with ropes so that his shoulder blades would touch and then they applied pressure to his arms while his head was between his feet. Stockdale endured this tremendous torture while in the Hanoi Hilton.
