ITALY: ATHLETICS: Double amputee Oscar Pistor...
Duration: 1:03Source: ITN Source
Double amputee sprinter Oscar Pistorius looks unlikely to be allowed to run in the Beijing Olympic Games. A report in German newspaper Die Welt on Thursday (December 20) quotes Professor Peter Bruggemann as saying that, using prosthetic blades, Pretorius has "a considerable advantage" over able-bodied competitors. Bruggemann, the director of the Institute of Biomechanics at the German Sports University in Cologne, was the man commissioned by the IAAF to test the South African paraplegic athlete who wants to be allowed to compete against able-bodied athletes in next August's Olympics in Beijing. In November, Bruggemann held tests with Pistorius and six able-bodied runners with similar 400-metre performances. A public announcement of the results had not been expected until the new year. "The IAAF does not plan to discuss the contents of the report, or make any public announcement about any decision related to the report, until January 10, 2008," it said in a statement on Wednesday (December 19). "Blade runner" Pistorius, 21, was born without either calf bone and was already on prosthetic limbs before he learned to walk. After a rugby injury in 2003 Pistorius took up athletics. Since then he has won 200 metres gold in the 2004 Summer Paralympic Games and holds the double amputee world records at 100, 200 and 400 metres. His best time for the 400 metres is 46.56 seconds, compared with world champion Jeremy Wariner's best of 43.45.
