American Can't Escape Mexico? My son Mike Thompson witnessed a serious crime of a Canadian in Cabo San Lucas at the Hotel Riu on Thursday, May 15, 2008. He is being held by Mexican authorities despite the fact he helped the victims during the crime and is not considered a suspect. What began as an attempt to offer help, has resulted in him being held in protective custody by Mexican police for an undetermined amount of time. I am afraid to reveal the details of what my son has witnessed, for fear of his safety in Mexico. My son is the type of person that helps people when he can and that's exactly what he did. Mexican authorities have not given my son any information about when he will be released. I have contacted my [Illinois] state representatives, the U.S. State Department, and the U.S. consulate in Mexico and I feel that I have nowhere else to turn for help. My son speaks Spanish and has travelled all over Mexico. He's been going there for years and he loves the people but I think this would change his mind forever. I have been on the Fox Morning News to tell my story in hopes that there will be someone out there that has or knows someone who has the political influence to get my son back home where he belongs.
