Tutorial: Guide to Mobile Lighting: What to look for
Duration: 10:11Source: YouTube
This tutorial covers what to look for when buying lights.Overview:Voltage Power Selector: Some lights can work in multiple countries, others can'tMicrophone Sensitivity: Some Lights have adjustable microphone sensitivity while others do not.Removable Power: Most lights have removable power coords (IEC Power). Some do not. Removable cords are easier to store and transport but can occassionally create connection issues.DMX connectors: Determines whether or not the light is DMX controllable or not.Master/Slave operation: Lights that are Master/Slave capable will mimic one another - making your light show look much more professional. A very important option. How much control: Some lights have onloy a little DMX control with few channels, others have more control. But don't get stuck in believing the more channels the better.Dimmer/Strobe channels: Check to see if the fixture will allow you to dim/strobe it in any mode or only in certain modes.Power Switch: can be good and bad. Most DJs preffer fixtures without power switches because they control them remotely anyways.LCD Screen or dipswitch setup: LCD screens offer more information to help you setup the fixture. Dipswitches can often cause you to forget how to set the fixture.Daisy Chain Power: Allows you to reduce the amount of extensions cords you need by allowing you to link your power from light to light. Some fixtures only allow low wattage daisy chaining.External Controller: Does the fixture allow for you to externally control it if not using a DMX controller or not?Master/Slave Mode: One fixture becomes the master - telling the other what to do to mimic, only the master will respond to the music.Brightness versus Power: Different bulbs require different amounts of power to create a certain level of brightness.Halogen: most ineffecient but cheapest options.Discharge: Most powerful of the bulbs, creates a lot of light but replacement bulbs cost a lot.LED: Most efficient bulb type, but as of right now has limitations with brightness.
