The Washington Capitals held a 3-0 lead midway through the second period, with two goals from Alex Ovechkin, before the Montreal Canadiens scored two of their own. Ovechkin scored another goal in the third period for his fourth career hat trick, but the Canadiens came back to tie with two goals, including one with 32.6 seconds left to send the game into overtime. In overtime, Ovechkin, with a broken nose and stitches in his lip, scored his fourth goal of the game with 1:26 left to give the Capitals a 5-4 win.
