A majority of lawmakers say the property tax issue has a long way to go before it's ready to pass. The House Finance and Taxation committee has passed the bill and it could be voted on as soon as tomorrow. This is the bill that could give you money back in property tax credits. It's one of Governor Hoeven's proposals. The big disagreement is over property tax caps, limiting how much local governments and schools can raise property taxes in one year. (Rep. Arlo Schmidt / (D) Maddock) 60% of our tax statement is to the schools so we should focus our effort on giving our money to the schools. As far as the caps go, I believe in local control. (Rep. Jim Kasper / (R) Fargo) We give them money for two years, which is nice 80-90 million but after that and the financial relief goes away and property taxes go up greatly then people are going to say that's not what we wanted, not what expected. From my perspective, we have a long way to go yet and caps are the key. (Rep. Dave Weiler / (R) Bismarck What's important about a 3.5% cap is ND taxpayers have been bombarded with extremely high property taxes. If we're going to give $100 million dollar of property tax relief back to the people then I think we need something that is going to control taxes at the local level. The property tax bill is 2032. It passed out of committee by a 8 to 6 vote.
