1980년 12월 18일 뉴욕 스테이튼 아일랜드 출생이다. 98년 영화 [뮬란]의 사운드트랙 수록곡 'Reflection'을 통해 [RCA]와 레코딩 계약을 체결하였고, 댄스곡 'Genie In A Bottle'이 수록된 셀프타이틀의 데뷔앨범을 통해 전 세계 앨범판매 천만장이라는 쾌거를 이룩하며, 2000년대 아이돌 여가수의 대표주자로 떠오르게 된다. 이후 2000년 한해 동안 데뷔앨범과 라틴어 번안앨범, 캐롤앨범까지 무려 3장의 앨범을 차트에 랭크시키며 수퍼스타로써 확실하게 자리매김하게된다. 그러나 2001년에는 무명시절 녹음했던 데모테입을 이전 소속사에서 2집인것럼 꾸며서 판매하는 통에 골머리를 썩은 적도 있었으나, 2002년 11월 앨범 타이틀만큼이나 파격적인 자켓의 [Stripted]발표, 싱글곡`Dirrty`를 히트시키며 건재함을 과시했다.
