SCRIPT: The Roman Catholic Church has a new way of dealing with the issue of sexual abuse - a comic book and a coloring book. Issued by the Archdiocese of New York, the books have been distributed to schools and religious education programs - in an effort to warn children about sexual predators. SOUNDBITE: Joseph Zwilling, Communications Director, saying: (English) "We developed the coloring book and the comic book as an age-appropirate way to help give young people the information they need so that they can be safe in a variety of situations, to know what to do, what not to do, and how to avoid situations in which they might be at risk." The books tell the story of a teenager who relies on an angel to report the sexual abuse of two classmates and instruct children what to do in these situations. But, critics charge they do not specifically state that priests may also pose as sexual predators. 78 year old Joe Byrnes said he was abused by a priest more than 50 years ago: SOUNDBITE: Joe Byrnes, Sexual abuse survivor and Co-Chairman Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP), saying: (English) " I think it's funny just to see how they handled the sex abuse scandal, and it's an insult to survivors of sex abuse as well as their families." Byrnes called the books a farce and said the Catholic Church should spend more time helping survivors heal. Over the past several years, some archdioceses have paid millions of dollars to settle lawsuits brought by people who say they were abused by clergy members. Sarah Irwin, Reuters.
