Kelly出生在美国最大的湖港城市，伊利诺伊州芝加哥市的南部地区，并且取了一个很男性的名字Steven Williams，从小他就喜欢在芝加哥街头摆弄电子键盘来演奏音乐，并且从那时起，R. Kelly就开始自己创作音乐。随后，由于在一次电视节目的新人秀中获胜，R.
