Human Rights campaign group Amnesty International organised protests at U.S. Embassies around the world on Thursday (January 11, 2007) to mark the fifth anniversary of the opening of the controversial U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba and demand its closure. A dozen American peace activists, including Cindy Sheehan, marched to the security fence around the U.S. military enclave in eastern Cuba chanting "Close the prison at Guantanamo Bay." They called on the U.S. to obey the Geneva Convention and shut down the prison. U.S. anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan, who lost her son in Iraq, led the march of some fifty people. The march was part of planned international protests five years after it opened with the first detainees flown in from the U.S.-led war in Afghanistan that followed the Sept. 11 attacks. In London, some 400 protestors gathered outside the U.S. Embassy in Grosvenor Square dressed in orange jumpsuits like those worn by prisoners at Guantanamo Bay. Shouting "Close Guantanamo Bay", the protestors also staged dramatic re-enactments of alleged abuse at the facility. In Madrid, protestors gathered signatures demanding the closure of the base and handed them to U.S. authorities.
