It’s a sad day in the community of Stanton... It's school is closing its doors after 125 years. Reporter Tracy Fugere has more on a story that's become all too familiar in rural North Dakota... (Faye Roth, Fifth and Sixth Grade Teacher) It's sad. It's hard to see the school close. There's a lot of memories. Faye Roth (rowth) teaches fifth and sixth grade. And has six students this year. Roth says being a student here...and then becoming a teacher in this small school is something special. (Faye Roth, Fifth and Sixth Grade Teacher) You get to really know them on a one-on-one basis. I mean, you get to know just about everybody. They know everybody in the building. It's not like the bigger schools, where they just see the faces but they actual know who you are, what you do, what your likes and dislikes are...You really get to know them on that personal level. The Stanton School is feeling the effects of declining enrollment like many other schools in North Dakota. (Kathy Bullinger, Stanton Principal) Open enrollment has been part of what is...has helped that along as well, just like in other places. And it is very sad. It's been a very good school. For many, many years we've seen a lot of great students come and go from this school and they've gone on to do great things and I'm sure the last sixteen will do the same. Bullinger says the school's closing has been a long time coming. She says trying to stay alive was an issue for the school when she started working here 24 years ago. Now that the school is closing its doorsBullinger says staff and students are ready for the change. But the community still is sad to see it go.
