강원도 지방기념물 제 39호로 지정되었으며, 강원도 태백시 화전2동에 위치해 있다. 백두대간의 주봉이 금대봉 능선 하부에 위치해 있으며 고생대 오도비스기 조선누층군 막골층에 해당하는 지질로서 약 3억년 내지 1억 5천만년전부터 생성된 석회동굴이자 국내 최고지대(920m)에 위치한 건식자연동굴로 동굴산호, 종유석, 석순, 석주 등이 많고 동굴 중간에 폭 50m, 길이 130m의 대형광장이 있어 신비로운 경관을 연출하고 있다.
