Hello on this Tuesday, the 3 day of June 2008. I’m Kristin Volk with a UPI Headline Update. Senator Barack Obama is expected to declare himself the Democratic Party's presidential contender tonight. The Democratic primary season is finally wrapping up today as Montana and South Dakota hold nominating contests. Obama needs just 42 delegates to clinch the nomination. Montana and South Dakota don't have enough pledged delegates at stake to put Obama over the top, but the Illinois senator could receive a rush of endorsements from the remaining undeclared superdelegates by the end of the day to allow him to claim victory. Senator Hillary Clinton is 201 delegates shy of capturing the nomination. Meanwhile, the House majority whip says he's backing Senator Barack Obama for president. Rep. James Clyburn, who's the top-ranking African-American in Congress, had been neutral in the Democratic presidential race until today. Clyburn said Obama is our nation's best hope for much needed change. General Motors says it's shutting down four truck and SUV plants. GM's chairman and CEO made the announcement earlier today, saying high gas prices have changed consumer preferences. Instead, GM plans to roll out more fuel-efficient vehicles. Two U.S. plants will close, one in Moraine, Ohio and the other in Janesville, Wisconsin. The other two shutting down are located in Canada and Mexico. Senator Edward Kennedy is recovering today after undergoing surgery yesterday to reduce the size of his brain tumor. Doctors gave few details about the procedure and didn't say how much tumor was removed. The 76-year-old is expected to stay in the hospital for about a week before returning home to Massachusetts to start radiation and chemotherapy. That's all for now. For all of us at UPI, have a great day and we'll see you tomorrow for more news and updates.
