为纪念“富士电视台开局50周年”以及“手冢治虫诞生80周年”，富士电视台将播映特别动画「森林大帝」。 手冢治虫原作的「森林大帝」，曾于1965年在日本富士电视台作为初次本格长篇彩色动画播出，其后也多次电影化和TV动画化，是人气持续约半世纪的作品。这回TV动画的播放是自1989年的放映（TV东京）以来第20年的再会。 今回作品是同原作剧情相当的原创作品。主题是围绕“亲情”“友情”和“环境问题”展开。该节目的企划松崎容子说：“自己动脑去思考，用自己的意志开拓人生才是重要的，希望能通过这个故事将这些教给孩子们。” 本次制作班底也迎来了新的豪华成员。监督是担任「CODE GEASS」等多个原创作品、且在现今界十分受注目的谷口悟朗，脚本是参与制作「SMAP×SMAP」等作的超人气作家铃木おさむ，在「最终幻想」中初展才华、现在在世界也有高人气的天野喜孝担当角色设定原案。 也许这个作品仍有着手冢世界的影子，在满载新要素的情况下，希望能成为孩子和大人都能喜欢上的作品。
