There is no sign outside the door saying men wanted but maybe there should be. In February United Blood Services needed to quit taking plasma from any women who’s ever been pregnant or anyone who's been transfused... That rules out quite a few people who were once able to give. As we report tonight, the center isn't in the hurt bag yet but it is changing to way they ask for donations and from whom... (16:24) (Dessie Baxter/Donor Recruitment) We don't want women to think they're not needed, we definitely need women to come in and donate whole blood. If they haven't been pregnant or transfused they can still donate plasma. But right now it's critical that they understand that we still need them and that we need them for whole blood. (reporter) It's a scare like others in the past. In the past HIV and hepatitis concerns changed who can give blood or plasma. (6:21) (Connie Morris/ UBS Center Director) And as the news comes out about HIV we've seen a very large decrease of the incidents of that happening. TRALI has become an emerging cause of death for somebody who has received a transfusion and has had an adverse reaction. (reporter) Transfusion related acute lung injury or TRALI caused 31 deaths in 2006. To put in simply, women who've been pregnant build up an anti-body that never hurts them. But there is a protein that's in our plasma that may hurt someone else if they receive it. (6:49) (Connie Morris/ UBS Center Director) So now our concern is just like always. We want to make the blood supply as safe as possible and this is the area that we feel we can improve. (reporter) So when you take out women who've ever been pregnant, or anyone who's ever had a transfusion that eliminates so many donor. And plasma is needed to save a life just as much as blood is.
