North Dakota had its name removed from a list recently - the list of states without a state fruit. Thanks to some dedicated students from Williston, the state now has an official fruit - and it is the focus of a brand new festival. Jim Olson reports from Williston... (Jim Olson, KX News) It started as a class writing project in Nancy Selby???s Williston classroom and culminated in this (Gov. John Hoeven) It is now official! (Jim Olson, KX News) A new law designating the chokecherry as the state fruit. (Gov. John Hoeven) The chokecherry is the North Dakota state fruit - way to go guys. (Jim Olson, KX News) Now the students and their teacher are helping create the first-ever North Dakota Chokecherry Festival (Ali Brurud, Williston Student) The whole festival is to celebrate what we've done and accomplished and to make the community part of this. (Nancy Selby, Williston Teacher) The festival is a way to celebrate the passing of the bill and to invite the community and whole state to come and be a part of it. (Tom Qvamme, Williston) You got a dozen kids who were determined to do something and they followed through. (Jim Olson, KX News) And so this Saturday, the festival will fill up Harmon Park with family fun (Amanda Suess, Williston Student) I'm excited to see how the parade goes. We already have the pageant and that went well and we have two chokecherry kids, and we have the parade, and kids fun, and I'm just excited for everything. (Ali Brurud, Williston Student) Going to have watermelon and lots of stuff. (And chokecherries?) And chokecherries of course. (Nancy Selby, Williston Teacher) I'm so excited and nervous too.
