The WERA 500gp National Title comes down to the last race with only 3 points separating myself & my buddy Doug Bowie. Neither of us need to win the final race, only finish ahead of the other to take the title. I get a great start & lead the (my class) into turn. The 1st bike that passes me is Tash Zarvalas, a friend and rider who races in the V1 & V2 classes (that started their race at the same time behind our 500gp race). The 2nd rider to pass is David Roper, who was in the 500gp race, but was not racing Doug or myself for the National championship. David is a world class rider (in a league of very few) & just shows up occasionally to kick a$$ & show us just how fast we’re not. The rest of the riders that pass me in the next few turns are the rest of the V2 guys...whole different class (& race), & way more power. The rest is pretty boring up to the 8:03 mark where Doug passes me on lap 4. He leads for the next few laps while I spent my time trying trying to catch up. On lap 7, around the 14:32 mark, Doug sits up coming out of turn 7 to see where I'm at & I have to check up to keep from hitting him (since i had a good drive coming out of that turn & had planned to just hammer the throttle & draft him down the back straight). I lost my drive & the drafting idea doesn't work out so well. He continues to lead until the last lap in turn 1 when I got a good drive going up the hill (15:44 mark). Doug passes me back going into turn 6 (16:32 mark), but I still have a good drive going & thought for a second about stuffing it up the inside of him going into turn 7, but then miss my downshift & overshoot the turn slightly (16:35 mark). Then only place I know that I can make time on him now is through turns 10a & b and down the hill into turn 12. Coming down the hill into turn 12 (17:28 mark) I try a last ditch effort to grab a quick downshift & run it up the inside of Doug. From that point on it's a drag race to the line. At the finish line the gap was .042 seconds. If you...
