FearNet Starts on Halloween

Comcast and Sony look to add a little fright to the Halloween season and beyond by launching a new platform, called FearNet, to provide video content via cellphones, Comcast's video-on-demand service, and the Internet.

FearNet will feature over 200 horror films from Lions Gate, Sony Pictures, and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. The movies will be free using the Comcast On Demand service and FearNet web site.

"Next week on Halloween we'll unveil the new multiplatform network available on video-on-demand, on line and wireless devices. This is FearNet and it will be dedicated to the best of horror programming. There are a lot of good things coming out of our content division and we congratulate the group on all the progress they've made," said Executive Vice President John Alchin of Comcast.

The FearNet web site, http://www.fear.net/, will launch on October 31st for Halloween. Users will be able to watch free movies online in addition to other content including movie previews and clips such as the Saw 3 trailer. The FearNet web site will also allow viewers to chat while watching horror videos.

Officials at Comcast said FearNet represents the future of their blended solution: offering programming over the Internet and via video-on-demand.

The companies look to profit from the new venture selling advertising on the web site and by providing the on-demand service to other cable companies.

Watch the ISAF Sailing World Championships Online

Sportshows Television, the TV production arm of Narrowstep Inc. and Octagon CSI, owned by The Interpublic Group, announced that they have won the contract to provide the television production and distribution for the 2007 International Sailing Federation's ISAF Sailing World Championships which will take place in Cascais, Portugal. The two companies outbid more than nine leading production and distribution companies from around the world and will host and televise the event from June 28 through July 13, 2007. Narrowstep's client, Sail.tv, will be the broadband TV platform for the competition.

"Managing the television production and distribution is a significant step for ISAF and part of our long term strategy," said Luissa Smith, Director of Communications for the International Sailing Federation. "The ISAF is very excited to be partnering with two such renowned companies on our most significant event. We were impressed with all the companies we met, but this partnership was most able to demonstrate a distribution strategy that was hard to beat, together with their great understanding of sailing."

Sportshows Television producer Sam Usher said, "The event attracts the very best competitors in the world and will make for exciting and eye-catching television against the picturesque backdrop of Cascais. We are looking forward to the challenge of becoming host broadcaster for this prestigious event."

"Outside of the Olympics this is the pinnacle of the sailing calendar and we are delighted to have won the production and distribution deal with our partner Sportshows Television," said Paula Rigby, Octagon CSI's Head of International Production Development. "This is a very exciting venture to be working on."

"Broadband TV channels are the future, and our sailing community around the world will welcome the opportunity of seeing the action live each day, as no other broadcast platform can offer so many hours devoted to the event in its scheduling. This is precisely why we launched the channel, and this deal underlines the unique global proposition we have established for the sport," said Sail.tv Managing Director Andy Steward.

The 2007 ISAF Sailing World Championships comprises all 11 Olympic sailing events, including men's, women's and open events. Each event is a World Championship in its own right, with all 11 contested under the umbrella of the 2007 ISAF Sailing World Championships. The event will provide the first of two opportunities for sailors to qualify for the 2008 Olympic Games and in keeping with the stature of this event 75 percent of such qualification will be achieved in Cascais.

Heavy.com and TransWorld Media Launch Action Sports Broadband Channel

Heavy.com, the world's No. 1 digital entertainment brand with more than 14 million unique viewers monthly (Nielsen), and TransWorld Media, the world's leading action sports media brand, today announced a partnership agreement establishing a new TransWorld Channel on Heavy.com. Heavy will team with TransWorld to create a channel on Heavy.com dedicated to showcasing snowboarding, skateboarding, motocross, BMX and surfing. Content will be contributed by TransWorld's industry leading editorial teams from TransWorld SKATEboarding, TransWorld SURF, TransWorld SNOWboarding, Ride BMX, TransWorld Motocross and QUAD Off-Road.

Launching in mid-October, the TransWorld Channel will become the first channel on Heavy Sports, which will feature the best of killer stunts, big tricks, huge crashes and other cool footage of the stars and up-and-comers of these sports.

"We're thrilled to initiate a partnership with TransWorld Media, the most venerable brand in the action sports space," said Simon Assaad, Co-Founder and Co-CEO of Heavy.com. "TransWorld's programming perfectly complements Heavy's catalogue of live action and animated shows that amuse, titillate and satisfy even the most voracious 18 - 34 year old entertainment junkie -- programming too humorous and outrageous for TV."

"Our partnership with Heavy.com is a great example of TransWorld's commitment to delivering action sports content to a broader audience," said Scott Dickey, President of TransWorld Media. "A Transworld channel on Heavy.com provides a tremendous extension for our advertising partners, both endemic and non-endemic, to expand their investment in the action sports industry and with one of the most prominent entertainment sites on the web today."

In August, Nielsen/NetRatings named Heavy the 5th Fastest Growing Web Brand. Heavy's counts viewership at more than 14 million unique visitors per month, the majority of which are young males, a demographic highly coveted by advertisers.

The young, male action sports community that TransWorld Media has served for almost 25 years has a voracious appetite for video; in the 12 months through July 2006, 26 million videos have been viewed on the TransWorld network of sites. From May '05 to May '06, monthly video views doubled from 1.1 million a month to 2.5 million. The majority of this video is created for the sites by TransWorld's core network of editors and freelancers, supplemented by other action sports film makers as well as user generated content from action sports athletes and the enthusiasts themselves.

Russian Internet TV site MoeTV to Launch

Aggregator Limited announced the launch of its first TV-over-Broadband (TVoBB) service, a ground-breaking Russian language portal that is set to change the TV viewing habits of over half a million Russians living in the UK. MoëTV (pronounced 'my-oar TV' and meaning My TV in English) will go live later this month and will provide a vast collection of on-demand entertainment, drama, current affairs, films, documentaries, music and children's programming. Consumers interested in the service can pre-register by going to www.moe.tv and entering their email address. The service will offer around 400 hours of programming at launch, growing to an average of 1000 hours, refreshed monthly.

MoëTV is a unique service, combining the speed of broadband and the best in Russian television with high quality pictures and sound. At launch Aggregator has secured licences for programming from over 20 content suppliers including Amedia, Discovery Networks, Mosfilm, MTV Russia, National Geographic, nTV and RenTV. MoëTV has no mandatory subscription charges, meaning consumers can choose to obtain content on a per-view basis of 99p to £2.99 per programme or to view unlimited content for a £15.99 monthly payment. All the viewer needs to receive MoëTV is a broadband connection from any ISP and a PC or laptop. Programming can be viewed on the PC or on the TV using a media extender. Aggregator has built a unique TVoBB content delivery platform, based on open standards technologies, to provide the viewer with a quality and easy to use service - for example MoëTV can schedule downloads so that users don't exceed their ISP's monthly download limits.

"The launch of this service will provide broadcast-quality television services to the 500,000 Russian speakers in the UK," said Aggregator's co-founder and Director of Programming, Chris Griffin. "This is a well-educated, affluent community that has grown rapidly in the UK but is woefully underserved by mainstream television platforms. MoëTV can ensure that they, and their families, stay in touch with their language and culture while they are living abroad."

MoëTV is the first in a series of planned service launches targeted at niche audiences from Aggregator, the brainchild of senior television industry figures Martin Goswami and Chris Griffin. Aggregator's TVoBB services will create a new UK pay-TV platform, an on-demand broadband service that will deliver high-quality content to ethnic and special interest communities that are currently underserved by the television market.

"In order to be successful and provide consumers with exciting services they are prepared to pay for, new TV delivery platforms such as IPTV and TVoBB need differentiated content. We are excited about the potential of a fast growing broadband universe, so we have created services that work best in an IP based environment,' said Aggregator's co-founder and CEO Martin Goswami. "It seems that many operators currently planning IPTV services are targeting audiences who are already well-served on existing platforms. We've looked at that model and rejected it. What we've done instead is to develop packages of the best content available for specialist audiences who are not part of the mainstream pay-TV franchise."

"Ultimately we are designing a smart, TV-over-broadband platform that drives new routes to the consumer and opens up new revenue streams for content owners," added Griffin. "Our service ensures a high quality viewing experience that is targeted at specific communities and available to anyone with a broadband connection."

Aggregator is well advanced with a number of services aimed at underserved communities and interest groups. In 2007, the company plans to bring all these services together under a common platform brand incorporating the Freeview channels and PVR functionality.

New AP-AOL Video Survey Finds More Than Half of Internet Users Are Watching Video Online

According to a new AP-AOL Video survey, more than half (54 percent) of all U.S. Internet users have watched or downloaded a video clip or full-length program from the Web. The survey, which examined online video trends and usage habits among 1,347 online video users, further revealed that 32 percent of online video users say they watch more online video today than they did one year ago.

Nearly three-quarters (71 percent) of online video users would prefer to watch an ad before a video in order to watch the video for free, while 23 percent say they'd rather pay for ad-free videos. Most frequently viewed videos include:
  • News: 72 percent
  • Television or movie clips: 59 percent
  • Music videos: 48 percent
  • Sports highlights: 44 percent
  • Amateur videos: 43 percent
  • Concert highlights: 23 percent
  • Full-length movies or TV shows: 22 percent
  • Live sporting events: 17 percent
  • Video podcasts: 17 percent
  • Live concerts: 9 percent
"There's no question that online video usage is growing faster than most predicted, particularly as more diverse, appealing and high quality branded video content is being made available on the Web," said Kevin Conroy, Executive Vice President of AOL. "As more and more Web users adopt broadband, demand for online video of all types, including news, music videos and concerts, TV and movies, sports highlights, and user generated video mash-ups will continue to grow at a very fast pace."

Top-line survey findings also include:
  • More than two-thirds (69 percent) of online video viewers say they find videos they want to watch by browsing the Web. Meanwhile, 61 percent hear about videos from friends and 58 percent regularly visit a roster of favorite video sites. Thirty-seven percent use search engines to find videos and 36 percent learn about videos from magazines or TV.
  • Those with a high-speed Internet connection are more likely than dial-up access users to watch video online (46 percent vs. 22 percent). Men (48 percent vs. 32 percent of women), adults ages 18-34 (48 percent) and urbanites (46 percent) are most likely to watch video online at least once a week.
  • Women over age 45 are more likely to watch more video today than they were one year ago as compared to men of the same age (32 percent vs. 20 percent). At the same time, online video users under age 35 are more likely to watch more video today than those over age 35 (38 percent vs. 28 percent).
  • More than half (54 percent) of online video viewers prefer to watch their videos on their computer monitor, while 37 percent say they would rather watch online videos on a television connected to their computer.
  • Nearly ten percent (7 percent) of online video users prefer to watch videos on a portable device, such as a PDA or mp3 player. Fully 13 percent of adults ages 18-29 favor watching videos on a portable device, more than any other age category.
  • One in ten online video users say that now that they can watch video online, they watch less television. Eighty-seven percent of online video viewers say their television viewing habits remain unchanged by the proliferation of online video.
**Note to Broadcast Media: B-Roll is available and can be previewed by logging onto http://www.thenewsmarket.com/AOL.

Survey Methodology

Interviewing for the AP-AOL Video Survey was conducted by Ipsos Public Affairs by telephone July 27-30, August 1-3 and August 7-9, 2006 among a sample of 3,003 adults age 18 and older, including 1,347 online video users. The margin of error is +/- 2 percentage points for all adults. For online video users, the margin of error is +/- 2.5 percentage points.
