In order to give 82-year-old Pope Benedict XVI 'time to rest' before his duties on Christmas Day, the 2009 Christmas Eve Midnight Mass will be held at 10pm CET. In the past, the Christmas Eve midnight Mass started at midnight and has not ended until well after 2am. The following morning, the Pope then has to be in St Peter's for the Christmas Day service and the noon blessing Urbi et Orbi - 'to the city and to the world'.
