The 2009-2010 La Liga (Liga BBVA) takes place August 29, 2009 until May 16, 2010. The following 20 teams compete in the 2009-2010 season: Almería, Athletic Bilbao, Atlético Madrid, Barcelona, Deportivo La Coruña, Deportivo Xerez, Espanyol, Getafe, Mallorca, Málaga, Osasuna, Racing Santander, Real Madrid, Real Valladolid, Real Zaragoza, Sevilla, Sporting Gijón, Tenerife, Valencia, Villarreal.
Xerez CD, Real Zaragoza, and CD Tenerife were promoted from 2008–09 Segunda División and replaced Real Betis, CD Numancia, and Recreativo de Huelva, who were relegated to the 2009–10 Segunda División. Current champion is Barcelona.
